All You Need To Know About Dental Cavities

Dr. Urwashi Dubey

What are dental cavities?

Dental cavities are holes that are created on our teeth or some structural damage caused by bacteria in our mouth.

What exactly causes dental cavities?

Cavities are caused by bacteria in our mouth that cling to our teeth along with saliva and food, and they start creating acid. That acid dissolves the enamel, or the outer structure of a tooth, and starts creating a hole.

How does a dentist check for tooth cavities?

When you visit, a dentist takes a couple of x-rays and performs an exam. Oral health scans also lead to the decision of whether you have dental cavities or not.

What are the stages of a dental cavity?

There are multiple stages to a cavity. It starts with maybe a slight brown stain or a black stain, and when it grows further or deeper, it becomes darker in color. The tooth structure in itself may initially be solid but eventually becomes soft and mushy.

Can a cavity spread to other teeth?

Absolutely. Cavities can spread to other teeth if the teeth are touching each other and because the bacteria that cause those cavities increase in number in the mouth.

Is it possible for cavities to go away?

The cavities themselves will not go away unless they are in the very initial stages. At that point, we ask our patients to brush and floss well, use fluoride varnish and fluoridated toothpaste, and other preventive measures. Eventually, yes, you would need some fillings.

How do you stop a cavity from progressing?

Cavities are best stopped at initial stages by maintaining good oral hygiene at home and avoiding frequent intake of sugary beverages or starchy food products. Basically, get your fillings done by your dentist.

How long do cavity fillings last?

Typically, we say anywhere between 3 to 5 years. However, it depends on how well you maintain your oral health.

Can dental cleanings prevent cavities?

Absolutely. Dental cleanings reduce the bacteria and all the plaque that forms on top of the teeth. Less plaque leads to fewer bacteria, leading to fewer cavities. It's also a way for the dentist to keep a constant eye on your teeth and apply fluoride, which prevents cavities.
